Joint Reconstruction: Knee

This service deals with all problems associated with the knee in adults. This includes the diagnosis and treatment of problems arising from knee disorders deriving from sports injuries, accidents and all aspects of arthritis. RNOH is also leading in the development of knee cartilage transplantation (see Cartilage Transplantation) and plays an important role in terms of research in knee services.

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) receives clinical referrals to our specialist, tertiary neuro-musculoskeletal services from primary, secondary and tertiary care institutions regarding both NHS and private patients.

From Monday 14 March 2022, the RNOH Joint reconstruction service have committed to using ‘PATHPOINT’, an electronic referral and pathway management system, an electronic referral and pathway management system, for all Consultant-led referrals from secondary and tertiary care organisations.

PATHPOINT offers significant benefits to referrers:

General Practitioners should continue to refer to RNOH using the UK Electronic Referral System (ERS)- please see below.

To submit a referral to Joint reconstruction Knee team, please access the 'PATHPOINT' link (within your Secure hospital network) and follow the steps below:

1. Register with your personal NHS email address for a PATHPOINT account to manage your referral/s

2. Login to your account with your credentials by clicking the 'PATHPOINT' link

3. Input your referring organisation, and patient PID details

4. Click the drop down list of referral pathway forms and select "Tertiary Joint reconstruction Knee referral" and click "Go to referral form" to launch the form

5. Fill in all fields of the Tertiary [name of sub-speciality] referral form and click "Save Tertiary Joint reconstruction Knee referral"

NB: You will receive notification emails to your NHS email account from PATHPOINT from the Joint Reconstruction service team with updates about the status of your referral if further information is required.

GP Referrals

We accept referrals from GPs via the NHS e-referral system.

The Complex Revision Knee Network MDT will allow knee surgeons to discuss cases where there are painful or poorly functioning knee replacements, infected knee replacements, stiff knee replacements or other instances in which revision knee surgery is being considered.

How to Refer into the RNOH Revision Knee Network MDT through PathPoint

To submit a referral to Joint reconstruction Knee team, please access PATHPOINT via https://rnoh.openmedical.thirdparty.nhs.uk (within your secure hospital network) and follow the steps below:

Register with your personal NHS email address for a PATHPOINT account to manage your referral/s
Input your referring organisation & the patient’s name, NHS number, local number and date of birth.
Click the drop down list of referral pathway forms and select "Revision Knee MDT Referral" and click "Go to referral form" to launch the form
Fill in all fields of the Revision Knee MDT referral form and click "Save” at the bottom of the page. Please ensure all relevant imaging has been transferred over via the IEP.

The MDT is scheduled to run Thursday mornings – 08:00-09:00.

Hip and knee replacement, rehabilitation and cartilage transplanation

Mr Will Aston - Surgical treatment of arthritis, including cartilage transplanation, arthrosopic knee surgery, knee and hip replacement surgery, complex hip and knee revision surgery and the management of bone and soft tissue tumours.

Professor Tim W R Briggs - Bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Complex hip and knee surgery. Complex revision hip and knee surgery. Cartilage transplanation.

Mr Richard Carrington - Primary and revision hip and knee replacement, minimally invasive primary hip and knee replacement, cartilage transplanation and knee surgery.

Mr James Donaldson - Primary, complex primary and revision hip replacements. Partial and total knee replacements, complex primary and revision knee replacements. Patient specific and customised implants. Arthroscopic and soft tissue knee surgery. Cartilage regeneration and joint preserving procedures, including osteotomy. Patello-femoral re-alignment procedures.

Professor Alister Hart - Revision hip surgery. Optimising function and survival of hip and knee replacements for patients with arthritis.

Mr Chethan Jayadev - Primary, complex primary and revision hip and knee replacements. Partial knee replacement. Infected hip and knee replacements. Knee preservation surgery including oseotomies. Knee arthroscopy and meniscal repair. Knee ligament reconstruction and patellar realignment procedures.

Mr Rob McCulloch - Primary and complex primary hip and knee replacements. Revision hip and knee replacements. Periprosthetic joint infection.

Mr Jonathan Miles - Revision hip and knee replacement. Sports injuries to the knee. Complex hip and knee replacement. Customised implants. Cartilage injuries. Infected joint replacement.

Mr Rob Pollock - Bone tumours, soft tissue sarcoma, primary and revision hip and knee and cartilage transplantation.

Professor John Skinner - Hip replacement and revision surgery. Knee replacement and revision surgery. Bone and soft tissue sarcoma surgery; resection and reconstruction.

Mr Erden Ali - Primary, complex and revision hip and knee replacements, Hip and Knee Surgery, Knee arthroscopy

There are two fellowship positions for post CCT surgeons, with FRCS (Tr&Orth) or equivalent, wishing to undertake further training in complex hip and knee surgery. The fellow will spend one year at the RNOH rotating between the consultants.
